MATCH PREVIEW | Portland Timbers U-23s host Lane United FC at Providence Park Tuesday

The Timbers U-23s return to 2016 PDL regular-season action on Tuesday, May 24, as they play host to Lane United FC at Providence Park; kickoff is set for 11 a.m. (Pacific).


The Timbers U-23s (0-1-1, 1pt) enter this week’s home match after battling Victoria Highlanders FC to a 1-1 draw at Providence Park on May 20. After trailing 1-0 heading into stoppage time in the second half, midfielder Tim Mueller provided the equalizer for Portland. After being released from the midfield by defender Phil Fives, Mueller, who came on as a halftime substitute, continued his driving run toward the near post before powering his strike into the roof of the net.


Head coach Jim Rilatt and his staff lead a group of 11 returning players and 21 new additions. Returning to the side is goalkeeper Collin Partee; defenders Niko De Vera, Ben White, Noah Gaines; and midfielders Ivan Alvarado, Reid Baez, Geoffrey Dee, Edson Martinez, Sam Werner, Foster Langsdorf; and forward Anthony Macchione.


Lane United FC (1-0-2, 5pts) will play their fourth game of the 2016 PDL campaign after playing to a scoreless draw against Highlanders FC on May 21. In the first match of the 2016 PDL season, United FC defeated Portland 1-0 on May 7 at Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District. LUFC's roster consists of 19 college players, including five from Oregon State, four from Creighton University and two from the University of Portland.


Tuesday's match will be the second Providence Health & Fitness Day of the 2016 season, marking the program’s seventh year of promoting healthy living to youth in the community through soccer.
