CALGARY, Alberta – Playing their final game of a two-match road trip in Calgary, the Portland Timbers U-23s fell 2-1 to Calgary Foothills FC at Glenmore Athletic Park on Sunday afternoon.

Foothills FC (4-1-1, 12pts) opened the scoring in the third minute when defender Jay Wheeldon redirected Calgary’s corner kick service into the back of the net to build an early 1-0 lead. In search of the equalizer, the U-23s earned their first penalty kick of the season after Calgary was called for a handball in the box. Defender Dakota Barnathan calmly converted the spot kick in the 35th minute to level the score heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Timbers U-23s created several scoring opportunities through defender Niko De Vera, forward Anthony Macchione and forward Jorje Herranz. In the 82nd minute, Calgary scored their second goal of the match after converting on a loose ball in the box. In search of a second equalizer, Portland nearly scored off of a set piece in stoppage time when Jaime Mirralles’ header narrowly missed the near post.

Next up, Portland will play their third consecutive road match against Washington Crossfire on Friday, June 3, at Redmond High School; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific).
