Thorns FC International Notebook: USWNT wins weather-shortened match

Several Thorns FC players were in action again over the weekend with critical EURO qualifying matches abroad and high-profile international friendlies.

United States 2, Japan 0
Playing the second of two friendlies against Japan, the USWNT posted a 2-0 win in a weather-shortened match in Cleveland on Sunday. The match was stopped in the 76th minute and was abandoned after a lengthy weather delay.

Thorns FC midfielders Allie Long and Tobin Heath along with defender Meghan Klingenberg all started the match for the U.S., while midfielder Lindsey Horan entered the match as a second-half substitute.

Long tallied her second career assist for the USWNT on the team’s opening goal. Receiving a pass from Klingenberg after a missed clearance by Japan, Long dribbled into the box and sent a low, hard cross towards the far post to Julie Johnston for the finish in the 27th minute.

Brazil 2, Canada 0
Christine Sinclair captained her side in loss on June 4 as Marta tallied two goals for Brazil. Sinclair played 90 minutes in the match.

Iceland 4, Scotland 0
Dagny Brynjarsdottir and Iceland took control of Group 1 in EURO qualifiers with a 4-0 win against Scotland. Brynjarsdottir started and played 45 minutes.

France 1, Greece 0
France already qualified for the 2017 EUROs, but continued group play, earning a 1-0 win against Greece.

Amandine Henry started and played all 90 minutes in the match and while she didn’t earn an assist on the play, delivered a perfect ball to start the sequence that led to France’s goal in the match.
