The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
Tobin Heath, USA’s most skillful soccer player, two-time Olympic gold medalist, FIFA Women’s World Cup gold medalist and a Portland Thorns FC player, sat down with me to talk about her personal experience with being a professional soccer player. This experience gave me inspiration to continue to work towards my aspirations in life.
Being a soccer player myself, I spent this past summer watching the US Women’s National Team play in the FIFA Women’s World Cup from my living room T.V. Throughout every match I became more and more mesmerized by the tricks and footwork that Heath showed in every match that she played in, and she soon became someone I idolize. A few months later, I was given the opportunity to interview a player from the Portland Thorns. My dream job is to become a broadcast journalist, and I knew that this would be the perfect opportunity to do the two things that I love most. Knowing that Tobin Heath was on this team made me undoubtedly pick her as my first choice.
Standing at the Providence Park field, with professional soccer players warming-up feet away from me, and minutes away from interviewing Heath felt surreal. I was excited to finally meet Heath and most nervous about interviewing her. As Heath approached me, all my nerves disappeared, and I felt as if I was just another teammate.
I was interested in knowing if she had any advice for girls like me, and her response really stuck with me, “...just to do what you love, and to dream big, and to go for it, and to know that in anything that you want to do there’s going to be obstacles and setbacks but really believing in yourself and kind of having those people around you to encourage you during harder times is super important.” Her response reassured my hopes and dreams.
Since I had spent my past summer watching her play on T.V., I asked her if she still got nervous before a game and when interviewed.
“I never really experienced like feeling nervous, I think soccer stuff is the stuff that makes me feel the most comfortable like in my life, but I think it’s kind of like the responsibilities that I have to do like away from the field that I don’t really necessarily enjoy.”
Heath said her favorite part about Portland was Providence Park, “it really is like Soccer City USA and it’s just a really special place to play and to be a part of this community and a part of this family here with the Thorns and the Timbers.”
Getting to interview Heath was an unforgettable experience. The interview was only a couple of minutes long, but in that short amount of time, I truly got to see Heath’s personality and how humble she remains. Her advice motivated and assured me to continue to follow my aspirations in life. I am grateful that Heath took the time out of her day to give me the chance to interview her, and I’m excited to see how the Thorns soccer season goes.

Reportero Bilingüe es un programa comunitario diseñado para animar a los jóvenes de estar orgullosos de su herencia Hispana y su idioma. Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. Con una entrevista profesional, los estudiantes desarrollaran sus habilidades de escritura y lenguaje en español a la vez se estarán conectando con el deporte que les apasiona.

Siendo una jugadora de fútbol, pasé el verano pasado viendo al equipo de los Estados Unidos jugando en la Copa Mundial Femenina de la FIFA desde la televisión de mi casa. A lo largo de cada partido, me sentía más y más hipnotizada por los trucos y la habilidad que Tobin Heath hacía en cada partido que jugaba. Pronto se convirtió en mi ídolo. Unos meses después, se me dio la oportunidad de entrevistar a una jugadora del equipo Portland Thorns. Mi trabajo ideal es llegar a ser una periodista de televisión, y yo sabía que ésta sería la oportunidad perfecta para hacer las dos cosas que más me gustan. Sabiendo que Heath estaba en este equipo fue fácil seleccionarla como mi primera opción para mi entrevista.
Parada en el campo de Providence Park, con las jugadoras haciendo ejercicios de calentamiento a pies y minutos antes de entrevistar a Heath, me sentí fuera de este mundo. Me sentía emocionada de conocer finalmente a Heath, y estaba más nerviosa por entrevistarla. Cuando Heath se acercó a mí, todos mis nervios desaparecieron, y me sentí como si yo fuera otra miembro del equipo.
Estaba interesada en saber si tenía algún consejo para las chicas como yo, y su respuesta se me quedó grabada, " ... sólo haz lo que amas, y sueña grande, ve por tus metas, y tienes que saber que cualquier cosa que quieras hacer va a tener obstáculos y contratiempos, pero creer en ti mismo y tener personas a tu alrededor para animarte durante los tiempos más difíciles es súper importante.” Su respuesta “confirmó” mis esperanzas y sueños.
Como había pasado mi verano viéndola jugar en la televisión, le pregunté si ella todavía se ponía nerviosa antes de un partido y cuando es entrevistada.
"Yo nunca me he sentido nerviosa, creo que el fútbol es lo que me hace sentir más cómoda en mi vida, pero yo creo que es algo así como las responsabilidades que tengo que hacer fuera del campo que realmente no me gustan necesariamente.”
Heath dijo que su parte favorita de Portland es Providence Park, "realmente es la ciudad de fútbol de los Estados Unidos y es un lugar muy especial donde jugar y ser parte de esta comunidad y formar parte de la familia aquí con las Thorns y los Timbers.”
Entrevistar a Heath fue una experiencia inolvidable. La entrevista duró solo un par de minutos, pero en ese corto período, pude ver la personalidad de Heath y como permanece humidle. Sus consejos me motivaron y me ayudaron a enfocarme en mis metas. Estoy agradecida de que Heath tomó el tiempo para darme la oportunidad de entrevistarla, y estoy emocionada de ver cómo va la temporada de fútbol del equipo Thorns.
