MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 2, New York Red Bulls 0

PORTLAND, Ore. –Diego Valeri had a goal and an assist while Darren Mattocks scored late in second half stoppage time as the ten-man Portland Timbers defeated the New York Red Bulls Friday night at Providence Park in front of a sellout crowd of 21,144.

The Timbers earned their fourth clean sheet of 2017 while Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made three saves–including an acrobatic stop in the 90th minute on a point-blank header from New York's Sal Zizzo.

Match Moments

13' - CHANCE (POR) - Midfielder Sebastián Blanco took off quickly from the right corner of the area, split two defenders and hit an angled shot that went just wide of the far post.

39' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland's Darlington Nagbe received the ball from Diego Valeri near the top of the arc and curled a wicked shot that pinged off the Red Bulls cross bar.

52' - CHANCE (POR) - A series of one-touch passes sprung Valeri into the area. He crossed it back into the six-yard box for forward Jeremy Ebobisse but Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles sprung to knock the ball away.

65' - GOAL (POR) - Diego Chara, hustling down the right side on a Timbers throw-in, won the ball and carried near the right corner flag. He then zipped a ball back to a wide-open Valeri who redirected it into far corner to give Portland a 1-0 lead.

80' - RED CARD (POR) - Timbers defender Larrys Mabiala was issued a straight red card for the denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity just outside the top of the Portland 18-yard box on Red Bulls midfielder Gonzalo Verón. The Timbers played the remainder of the match with 10 men while the Red Bulls' Sal Zizzo then missed just wide on the ensuing free kick from the close-in location.

90' - SAVE (POR) - Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made a win-preserving save when he leapt high and dove to parry away a point-blank header from New York's Sal Zizzo.

90+6' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers iced the win in stoppage time when Valeri crossed a ball to Darren Mattocks atop the New York box. The Red Bulls, racing back after having had a free kick blocked in the Timbers area, were left out of position and could only watch as Mattocks received the ball from Valeri before hitting it into the near empty net to make the score 2-0.

Sealed with a counter.
