SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland midfielder Diego Valeri scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season on a first half penalty kick as the Timbers fought back to draw 1-1 with Seattle Sounders FC in front of a crowd of 51,796 at CenturyLink Field Sunday evening. Valeri has now scored a goal in six straight matches.
The draw keeps Portland atop the Cascadia Cup standings on eight points with Seattle second on six and Vancouver on four points in third place.
1' - CHANCE (POR) - Seconds into the game, midfielder Diego Valeri spied Sebastián Blanco out to his left. Blanco carried to the middle, faked a shot, and then hit a swerving ball that forced Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to tip it just over the bar.
17' - GOAL (SEA) - Following a Seattle corner kick into the box, and a mad scramble inside the six, Seattle's Cristian Roldan managed to kick the loose ball into the net for a 1-0 Seattle lead.
24' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland's Darren Mattocks, sprung down the right side after Sounders defender Chad Marshall slipped, carried in towards goal. He crossed a bit behind to Valeri near the top who spun to get a foot to it but Frei made the save.
36' - CHANCE (POR) - After some sustained pressure in the attacking third between Dairon Asprilla and Valeri, the ball fell for Blanco near the penalty spot but he put his shot high over the bar.
45+2' - GOAL (POR) - A penalty kick was awarded for Portland when Valeri lofted a great ball forward to Mattocks who had split the Seattle defense. Mattocks chested it down as he went in but then Frei came off his line to take the forward down in the box. Referee Mark Geiger pointed to the spot and Valeri converted to his left to score his team-leading 16th goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
47' - SAVE (POR) - Seattle's Jordan Morris broke through on goal down the right side, carried towards goal and shot but Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella cut down the angle and smothered the ball for the save.
56' - SAVE (POR) - Attinella came up big again to deny Morris on a point-blank shot in the second half.
80' - CHANCE (POR) - Blanco knifed through the Seattle defense and hit a tight-angled shot on frame that Frei palmed away.
90+3 - RED CARD (SEA) - Seattle defender Nouhou was shown a straight red card late in second half stoppage time after elbowing Diego Chara in the face. The Sounders played the remainder of the match with 10 men.
The Portland Timbers take a break from MLS play due to international matches next week but return on Sept. 9 to travel to take on New York City FC (2:30pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
