USL MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 2: 1, Tulsa Roughnecks FC: 1

T2, Jack Barmby vs. Tulsa Roughnecks FC - Sept. 3, 2017

PORTLAND, Ore. – Playing their second game in five days, T2 earned their second straight result with a 1-1 draw against Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Providence Park on Sunday afternoon.

With the draw, T2 improved their record to 3-1-1 in five all-time matches against Tulsa dating back to 2015.

T2 (2-18-5, 11pts) took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when midfielder Jack Barmby curled his free-kick attempt from the edge of the 18-yard box over the wall and into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. The goal marked Barmby’s first of the 2017 season for T2.

Roughnecks FC (11-10-4, 37pts) leveled the match in the 44th minute when midfielder Juan Pablo Caffa chipped his penalty attempt over T2 goalkeeper Wade Hamilton, who finished the match with a game-high four saves.

Holding a 7-3 shot advantage in the second half, T2 began the period on the front foot. Beating his defender down the right flank, defender Harold Hanson feinted to his right, creating inside the box, and struck his right-footed shot over the crossbar in the 59th minute. Seconds later, Barmby played a perfectly timed through ball in behind the Tulsa defense into the path of midfielder Victor Arboleda. Latching onto the ball inside the six-yard box, Arboleda’s shot forced Cerda into a strong save at the near post to force a corner kick.

After earning a free kick from about 20 yards out, midfielder Tomás Granitto blasted his right-footed effort inches over the crossbar in the 73rd minute.

With a 14-13 shot advantage in the match, Portland created a number of scoring chances in the first half. In the seventh minute, midfielder Renzo Zambrano found space on the edge of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that skipped wide of the target. Three minutes later, Barmby skipped past his defender on the right side of the penalty area, firing a left-footed shot that forced Cerda into a save in the 10th minute.

Cutting inside from the left wing, Arboleda sped past a Tulsa defender and set his shot inches over the crossbar in the 21st minute. After forcing a turnover in the Tulsa half in the 31st minute, Hanson found Barmby in transition at the top of the box. Taking a touch, Barmby’s curling shot skipped inches past the near post.

Next up, T2 will play host to Real Monarchs SLC at Providence Park on Saturday, Sept. 9; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific).

Postgame Quote Sheet
T2 head coach Andrew Gregor
General thoughts on the game…
“I thought we started the game well. It’s been a hard week for us. We had the game down in Rio Grande Valley. Renzo [Zambrano] is in his second game with the club. I thought we started the game very bright and maybe the heat and our tired legs kind of got us a little bit. We didn’t do a great job of managing their pressure and their waves of attack. It’s something obviously we need to work on and get better at. We go in at halftime tied and we started the second half very bright. I give my guys a bunch of credit. I’m proud of what they did out there under tough conditions. I’m proud of those guys for putting in the work and digging it out. If a couple of decisions maybe go our way, we win that game.”

On the team’s performance in the second half…
“When we were under it a little bit in the first half, I told them at halftime to make sure that we do a better job of taking care of the ball and being a little bit more patient in looking for the next pass. I think we did a better job of that and we were able to keep it a bit more. I thought Augi [Augustine Williams] did a better job in the second half of holding the ball up and battling. That’s really helpful in trying to connect some lines and get us to get up the field a bit.”

On what to expect from the team heading into Saturday’s match against Real Monarchs SLC…
“It’s another big game. We’re playing the Monarchs, who are top of the league. They came here last time and got the result. We went there and didn’t play very well last time. The guys should be up for it. There should be some confidence in that room to perform again next weekend because it was a difficult week for us. We saw what they’re made of today and we saw the guts they had. We’ll put in some good work this week and they’ll be ready to go on Saturday.”
