LANGLEY, B.C. – Playing the final game of three matches in seven days, T2 recorded their fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 road victory over Cascadia-rival Whitecaps FC 2 at McLeod Athletic Park Saturday afternoon.
Portland midfielder Victor Arboleda recorded his fourth goal of the season, including a game-high three shots on goal, while goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh earned his first shutout of 2017, tallying six saves.
T2 (3-20-6, 15pts) scored the lone goal in the 68th minute when WFC2 goalkeeper Spencer Richey spilled the ball on the edge of the penalty area, allowing Arboleda to quickly pounce and slot the ball into the empty net.
Whitecaps FC 2 (5-17-8, 29pts) nearly scored an equalizer in stoppage time when midfielder David Norman’s long-range shot towards the top corner of the net was punched away by a diving McIntosh in the 93rd minute.
Beginning the second half on the front foot, Timbers Academy midfielder Carlos Anguiano, making his first start of the season for T2, attempted a left-footed curling shot from the edge of the penalty area that was caught by Richey in the 47th minute.
After earning a free kick on the left wing, midfielder Tomás Granitto’s shot curled over the wall, but was punched away by Richey at the near post in the 60th minute. Letting the ball roll past him, Anguiano latched onto Arboleda’s pass at the top of the box, curling his left-footed shot into the arms of Richey in the 64th minute. Seconds later, defender Kyle Bjornethun whipped in a cross into the center of the box that found Timbers Academy forward Gio Calixtro, whose header was saved by Richey.
Arboleda was denied two great chances late in the match when he got on the end of Granitto’s lofted ball over the WFC2 defense, but Richey denied both of his attempts from just outside the six-yard box in the 88th minute.
Next up, T2 will travel to face LA Galaxy 2 at the StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 7; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
Postgame Quote Sheet
T2 head coach Andrew Gregor
On the team’s road shutout…
“It was a difficult game going to Vancouver. They’re a good team and I thought our performance was very professional. We defended well. We were able to get on the ball a bit and create some opportunities, especially on some counters. We put them under some pressure and we got rewarded for the performance.”
On the performances from goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh and midfielder Renzo Zambrano…
“I thought Kendall was very good today, making some good saves in not so easy conditions. He had to deal with a skipping ball on the hard turf. He was very stead and it was a good, professional performance out of Kendall. Renzo was back with the team today after coming off the hamstring injury and he was outstanding. It maybe took him a little while to get back into rhythm a bit, but you can see his experience, his work rate and his understanding of the team.”
On the next match on the road against LA Galaxy II…
“I think this is a nice confidence builder moving into the last three games. It’s always hard to go down there and play Galaxy II. The last time we were down there, we had a good victory coming from behind. We’re going to need to make sure that we do a better job of managing that game, but we’re looking forward to going down there and playing.”
