Thorns FC defender Emily Sonnett to play for Sydney FC during NWSL offseason

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC today announced that defender Emily Sonnett will play for Sydney FC of the Westfield W-League during the NWSL offseason.

Sonnett, 23, was one of four Thorns FC players to start all 24 matches during the regular season. The Marietta, Ga., native tallied three goals and one assist during the regular season, while also tallying the game-winning goal in Portland’s semifinal win over Orlando on Oct. 7 and the game-winning assist in the NWSL Championship on Oct. 14.

In her second season for Portland, Sonnett helped anchor the best defense in the league, which posted a 0.83 goals-against average – tied for the best goals-against average in NWSL history – while also conceding the fewest goals (20) in the league and recording 11 shutouts.

Sonnett will return to Portland before the start of the 2018 NWSL season.
