Thorns FC Notebook | Eckerstrom earns shutout in Newcastle victory over Brisbane

Britt Eckerstrom, Newcastle, 12.11.17

Four Portland Thorns FC players appeared for their respective Australian club sides this past weekend in Week 7 of the Westfield W-League.

Britt Eckerstrom and the Newcastle Jets rose to a 3-0 win over Hayley Raso, Celeste Boureille and the Brisbane Roar in a top-of-the-table clash. All three Thorns players earned respective starts and played through the full-time whistle. Raso had a couple exciting plays, including a shot on goal in stoppage time that deflected just wide of the net, however, Eckerstrom would go on to keep the clean sheet—her second of the season. The 24-year-old goalkeeper made a number of crucial saves in the shutout, including one against a would-be equalizer by Emily Gielnik at point-blank range.

With the victory, the Jets netted their fourth win of the season and move into a three-way share of first place with Brisbane and Perth Glory.

On Friday, Emily Sonnett traveled with Sydney FC to take on the Western Sydney Wanderers for a Sydney Derby Day matchup at ANZ Stadium, where the Sky Blues defeated their host 3-1. Sonnett was named to the starting lineup and played a full 90 minutes in the win. With the victory, Sydney FC improves to 3-3-0 and moves into a share of third place with Canberra United.

Ashleigh Sykes did not appear for Canberra United in their 2-1 loss to Melbourne City FC.
