MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 3, Minnesota United FC 2

PORTLAND, Ore. – Timbers defender Alvas Powell's goal and assist along with goals from Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi gave Portland a hard-fought 3-2 win over Minnesota United FC Saturday night at Providence Park.

Minnesota pulled a goal back from Darwin Quintero and an own goal but Portland held on for their first win of the season. The goals were the first of the year for Powell and Adi while midfielder Cristhian Paredes earned two assists in the match.

Match Moments

6' - CLEARANCE (POR): A dangerous throughball for Minnesota found forward Christian Ramirez breaking through the Portland defense. However, Timbers defender Bill Tuiloma raced back to put a perfect slide tackle through the ball and clear it away.

20' - GOAL (POR): Timbers defender Alvas Powell took a breathtaking, zig-zagging run down the right channel and into the box. His sharp-angled shot found the top corner just inside the near post to give Portland a 1-0 lead.

23' - GOAL (POR): Three minutes later, Powell was at it again, this time with a cross into the box that led to an goal. The ball was deflected off a Loons defender but midfielder Diego Valeri adeptly flicked it on with his right foot to nestle it into the bottom left corner of the net for a 2-0 home lead.

24' - CHANCE (POR): Forward Fanendo Adi nearly made it 3-0 when he took a beautiful through ball from Sebastián Blanco and sprinted in on goal. His shot was saved with a sprawling stop from goalkeeper Matthew Lampson.

25' - NO GOAL (MIN): Minnesota thought they pulled a goal back as a cross from the right side found an open Miguel Ibarra on the back post who tapped it in. However, referee José Carlos Rivero consulted with his linesman who ruled that Ibarra was offside.

31' - CHANCE (POR): The Timbers kept the pressure on. Blanco's blistering shot it the top post and clanged down and away in the 31st minute.

42' - SAVE (POR): Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson made a brilliant reaction save on a flicked on header at point blank range from Miguel Ibarra

58' - SAVE (POR): Gleeson made another great save on the other side of halftime when Minnesota's Ramirez spun and shot from a close angle. The Portland goalkeeper leapt up to deflect the ball over the bar and away.

64' - GOAL (MIN): Minnesota's Darwin Quintero received the ball from a throw in, spun his defender and scored to cut the Timbers lead in half at 2-1.

74' - GOAL (POR): Portland made it 3-1 on a beautifully worked goal from Fanendo Adi in the 74th minute. Blanco lofted a cross to the back post for Valeri. Valeri headed it down for an onrushing Cristhian Paredes who took a shot on the half volley that Adi re-directed with his head into the back of the net.

78' - NO GOAL (POR): Adi thought he had a brace in the second half as he muscled off a defender and scored in the lower corner. However, upon video review, the goal was disallowed due to Adi being ruled offside.

81' - OWN GOAL (MIN): Minnesota made it 3-2 when a ball over the top bounced off Portland's Tuiloma and into the goal. 

The Timbers continue their home stand next weekend when they host New York City FC Sunday, April 22 at 3pm PT at Providence Park.
