PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers advanced to the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals as they defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0 in the Round of 16 Friday night at Providence Park in front of a crowd of 14,556. Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco scored the lone goal for the victors as they extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games across all competitions.

Match Moments

11' - CHANCE (POR) - Forward Samuel Armenteros, receiving a pass near the edge of the box, beat his man with a nifty stepover and flick to himself. His chipped shot went past goalkeeper David Bingham but was cleared off the line by a Galaxy defender.

13' - CHANCE (POR) - Following a Timbers corner, midfielder Diego Chara corralled a loose ball on the edge of the area. His curling shot on target force a fingertip save from Bingham.

30' - GOAL (POR) - Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco got Portland on the board first following some great build up with a team goal. Working the ball at the center circle, Blanco passed the ball to the right sideline for defender Zarek Valentin. As Blanco sprinted ahead, Valentin sent a diagonal ball forward to Fanendo Adi who was cutting across the edge of the 18-yard box. Adi backheeled it to the onrushing Blanco who took a touch, bested his defender, and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead.

45+1 - SAVE (POR) - On a Galaxy corner, the ball was looped back inside the six-yard box over the head of goalkeeper Jeff Attinella. However, defender Larrys Mabiala jumped to head the ball up and over the bar and into safety.

55' - CHANCE (POR) - Armenteros, lurking at the top of the area, took a nice cross from Valentin on his right and fired a shot that skimmed off the top of the cross bar.

89' - SAVE (POR) - Attinella kept the clean sheet alive for Portland as he leapt high to his left to tip away a shot from LA's Ariel Lassiter.

The Timbers return to MLS regular-season play on June 24 on the road against Atlanta United FC (1:30pm PT, FOX). Their U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match date against the winner of the LAFC-Sacramento is to be determined.
