Timbers acquire Argentinian midfielder Tomás Conechny

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers announced today that the club has acquired 20-year-old Argentina youth-international midfielder Tomás Conechny on loan from Superliga Argentina club San Lorenzo for the remainder of the 2018 MLS campaign with a purchase option. Conechny will be added to the Timbers’ roster, pending a physical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of Tomás Conechny to our group during this summer transfer window,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers. “He is a player we have been following closely, and we believe he has a bright future ahead of him as a player who can play any of the attacking positions. We have been looking to add a young, talented dynamic player and feel that, in Tomás, we have a player who can help contribute short-term, while also giving us a long-term solution in several positions. The opportunity to bring him to Portland was a unique one, and the fact he had already been watched live many times made this possible when we had to move quickly to acquire him.”

Conechny began his professional career with San Lorenzo in 2016, making his professional debut on Oct. 16, 2016, in a 3-1 win over Arsenal de Sarandí. Since making his debut, the Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina, native has made 14 appearances in the top division for San Lorenzo, featuring in multiple positions in the midfield for the Argentine club. In the 2017-18 campaign, Conechny made seven appearances for San Lorenzo, including three starts, most recently starting and playing 77 minutes in the SuperLiga against Club Atlético River Plate on May 14, 2018.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to include Tomás Concechny at this juncture in the season,” said Giovanni Savarese, head coach of the Timbers. “Tomás provides our club with another quality, young player, and we look forward to working with him daily to maximize his development. He is a player who possesses very good attacking elements for his age, and we believe he has the tools to become a dangerous attacker in this league moving forward.”

On the international stage, Conechny has earned 21 caps (14 starts) at the youth levels for Argentina, representing his native country at the 2015 U-17 Sudamericano, the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup, the 2017 U-20 Sudamericano and the 2017 U-20 FIFA World Cup. Overall, Conechny has scored seven goals at the youth levels for Argentina, including a five-goal production at the 2015 U-17 Sudamericano in Paraguay, which ranked as a team-high during the tournament.

Conechny will occupy an international slot on the Timbers roster.
