MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 1, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers' unbeaten streak ended at 15 games as they lost 2-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC Saturday night at Providence Park. Diego Valeri scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season with a penalty kick conversion in the 71st minute while Vancouver goals came from Kei Kamara and Cristian Techera.


With the result, Portland, Vancouver and Seattle Sounders FC all each sit at three points each after two games played apiece in the Cascadia Cup standings



Match Moments

14' - GOAL (VAN) - The Whitecaps scored first in the 14th minute when Kei Kamara slipped ahead of his mark on a long free kick from Kendall Waston and looped a header past Jeff Attinella for a 1-0 Vancouver lead.


18' - CHANCE (POR) - Diego Valeri sent in a corner kick that found Larrys Mabiala on the back post but his header was deflected wide of the goal.


23' - SAVE (POR) - Attinella kept things close when he blocked a skipping shot from Vancouver's Felipe.

41' - PK MISS (POR) - The Timbers were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute when Vancouver's Waston tripped Valeri just inside the top of the 18-yard box. Valeri stepped to the spot but narrowly missed his penalty kick wide of the left post.


43' - GOAL (VAN) - Vancouver's Cristian Techera made it 2-0 for the visitors when he headed in a cross from Brek Shea.


50' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland's Andy Polo, subbed in at halftime, lofted a tricky shot that forced a save from Whitecaps goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic. Dairon Asprilla collected the rebound and his shot went up and off the crossbar.

59' - CHANCE (POR) - Alvas Powell split his defenders to speed in on goal with a slicing run through the right channel. His final shot was saved by Marinovic.


71' - GOAL (POR) - Valeri cut the deficit in half to make it 2-1 when he converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute. The PK was awarded two minutes earlier when Diego Chara slipped a throughball to Sebastián Blanco. Blanco went in on goal but was pulled down by Vancouver's Sean Franklin.

89' - CHANCE (POR) - Valeri curled a dipping 30-yard free kick around the Vancouver wall on frame forcing a diving save from Marinovic who pushed the ball away.
