Thorns FC re-sign midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC today announced that the club has re-signed midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir. The Icelandic international played for Portland during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, and returns for a third season in 2019 following the birth of her son.

“Dagny is an experienced and talented player who is familiar with the club and the NWSL, and we are excited that she is returning to Portland,” said Gavin Wilkinson, Thorns FC general manager and president of soccer. “With 2019 being a World Cup year, it was important to add players to our roster that can contribute for a majority of the season as numerous key players will be away with their respective national teams for large portions of the season.”

In her first two seasons with Portland, Brynjarsdottir, 27, appeared in 28 matches (17 starts), tallying five goals and two assists. In 2016, she helped guide Thorns FC to the NWSL Shield, recording five goals and one assist in her first season with the club. In 2017 as part of Portland’s run to its second NWSL Championship title, Brynjarsdottir played in 11 games (6 starts), recording one assist.

“We are excited to welcome Dagny back to Portland,” said Thorns FC head coach Mark Parsons. “She is a tenacious and energetic central midfielder who provided plenty of versatility during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. We love Dagny’s winning mentality and her desire to be the best she can be each day. She knows this club inside out and is an important addition ahead of the 2019 season.”

At the international level with Iceland, Brynjarsdottir has earned 76 caps, scoring 22 goals. Most recently, Brynjarsdottir featured in three matches during 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying, recording three goals and an assist, including a brace and an assist in a 3-2 win over Germany on Oct. 20, 2017.
