PRESEASON MATCH RECAP | C.S. Herediano 1, Portland Timbers 3

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica â€“ The Portland Timbers played their second match of the 2019 preseason, presented by Old Trapper Beef Jerky, registering a 3-1 win against C.S. Herediano at Complejo Deportivo Fedefutbol Plycem in San José, Costa Rica, on Thursday morning. Portland received a first-half goal from Lucas Melano, while Foster Langsdorf and Roy Miller each tallied a goal for the Timbers in the second half.

Preseason progression
The Timbers’ match against C.S. Herediano featured two 45-minute halves with substitutions at the 30th minute, halftime and the 60th minute of the match with 25 total players featuring for Portland. In total, nine players made their 2019 preseason debut for the Timbers, including Jeff Attinella, Sebastián Blanco, Diego Chara, Jeremy Ebobisse, David Guzmán, Marvin Loría, Larrys Mabiala, Diego Valeri and Jorge Villafaña.


Notes
Melano recorded his third goal in two preseason games in the win against C.S. Herediano. Melano tallied a brace in the Timbers first preseason match – a 4-0 win against Deportivo Saprissa on Feb. 4. Langsdorf recorded his first goal of the preseason, tallying Portland’s third goal of the match in the second half. Five players combined to score seven goals for the Timbers in two preseason matches in Costa Rica.


Key plays
Portland took the lead in the 26th minute of play when Melano battled with three defenders outside the box, before he advanced and calmly finished with a low shot to the goalkeeper's left, scoring his third goal in two preseason matches. Seven minutes later, Herediano tied the match at 1-1 when Antonio Pedroza converted a penalty kick.


In the 60th minute, Portland took a 2-1 lead when Andrés Flores played a cross into the box from the right wing for Roy Miller, who deposited a header into the back of the net from close range.


The Timbers added a third goal to the scoresheet in the 69th minute as Loría found space on the left wing and curled a well-placed cross into the box for Langsdorf, who converted with a header into the bottom left corner of the goal.


Mobile Mini Sun Cup
Following the conclusion of training in Costa Rica over the weekend, the Timbers will depart for Tucson, Ariz., to participate in the Mobile Mini Sun Cup and continue training from Feb. 11-23. During that span, the Timbers will face Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday, Feb. 13 (6pm PT, Stream at Timbers.com), before taking on the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, Feb. 16 (6pm PT, Stream at Timbers.com), USL side Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday, Feb. 20 (5pm PT), and Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Feb. 23 (4pm PT, Stream at Timbers.com), at the Kino Sports Complex.
