PORTLAND, Ore. – Cristhian Paredes scored a brace, Diego Valeri had a goal and an assist, Jorge Villafaña contributed two assists, Steve Clark made six saves and the Portland Timbers outclassed the LA Galaxy with a 4-0 win Saturday night at Providence Park to extend their unbeaten run to six games.
5' - CHANCE (POR) - Timbers midfielders Renzo Zambrano and Cristhian Paredes combined to steal the ball away from LA's Jonathan dos Santos at midfield. Paredes started forward and sent a throughball up to Brian Fernandez who charged through the right channel and hit a shot that went just wide of the near post.
16' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland's Diego Valeri, working on the left side, sent a ball through to the onrushing Paredes into the LA box. He took a touch to round Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham but the ball skittered out for a goal kick.
21' - CHANCE (POR) - Valeri capitalized on a bad LA pass near the edge of the 18-yard box, took a touch and hit a low shot that was saved by Bingham.
22' - CHANCE (POR) - After the Portland defense denied a shot from Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paredes pinged a ball forward up the middle to Sebastián Blanco who, in turn, pinged a ball up to the speeding Fernandez. Fernandez bore down on goal and hit a shot that Bingham dove to his left to parry away.
37' - SAVE (POR) - A Galaxy ball over the top found Julian Araujo who chested it down for Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic turned on his defender and hit a low shot that Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark dove to his right to gather.
37' - GOAL (POR) - Moments later, Portland went out to a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Jorge Moreira looped a cross in from the right that Paredes headed down and past Bingham for a goal.
40' - SAVE (POR) - A ball through found Ibrahimovic open in the Timbers box but Clark came off his line and made a point-blank reaction save to deny the Galaxy forward.
41' - GOAL (POR) - A minute later, Blanco sent a ball forward to Valeri who went in on goal, silkily nutmegged LA's Daniel Steres, and slotted his shot into the far corner for a 2-0 Timbers lead in the 41st minute.
48' - SAVE (POR) - Clark again came up big as LA's Favio Álvarez was on the Timbers doorstep and hit a quick shot that Clark got down to block away before the Timbers defense cleared the ball away.
74' - SAVE and BLOCK and SAVE (POR) - The Portland Timbers defense came up big in the 74th and 75th minute. Clark first came off his line to deny a shot from Ibrahimovic who had snuck through the backline. Staying forward as the Galaxy collected the rebound, a shot to the back post was headed away by defender Julio Cascante. LA again gathered the ball, cycled it out to Ibrahimovic on the wing who slipped a cross to Uriel Antuna and Clark, now back on his line, somehow dove across his right to save the shot spectacularly.
81' - GOAL (POR) - Paredes scored his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 for Portland when he took a perfect pass from Jorge Villafaña on his left, took a touch, and then deftly hit the upper 90.
RED CARD (LA) - The Galaxy went down to 10 men when Efrain Álvarez received a straight red from referee Allen Chapman. Portland's Marvin Loría had been fouled when Álvarez then kicked a ball into his face as he was on the ground.
88' - GOAL (POR) - Villafaña picked up his second assist of the night when a lofted ball from the left edge of the 18-yard box found an unmarked Jeremy Ebobisse on the back post who jumped and headed it in for a 4-0 Timbers lead.
FINAL WHISTLE - RED CARD - (POR & LA) - Moments after the final whistle, both Portland's Dairon Asprilla and LA's Diego Polenta were shown red cards by referee Chapman.
The Portland Timbers return to the road for their penultimate regular season away game on Aug. 4 when they face Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field. Kickoff is 1pm PT on ESPN.
