MATCH RECAP | Real Salt Lake 2, Portland Timbers 1

SANDY, Utah – Despite a second-half goal from Dairon Asprilla that temporarily tied the game, the Portland Timbers' season came to an end as they lost 2-1 to Real Salt Lake in Round One of the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Match Moments

10' - SAVE (POR) - Portland was tested early when RSL's Damir Kreilach cut inside from the left side of the 18-yard box and hit an angled shot that Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark pushed away. Defender Larrys Mabiala then cleared the danger.

14' - SAVE (POR) - Clark again came up big in the 14th minute. First, he came off his line to deny a speeding Kreilach. As he scrambled after the loose ball with Kreilach also giving chase, Clark slid outside the box to clear the ball upfield but only as far as RSL defender Aaron Herrera. With Clark off his line, Herrara chipped a shot from distance that Clark raced back and leaped high to acrobatically tip over the bar.

28' - GOAL (RSL) - Real Salt Lake scored first when a chipped ball over the Timbers backline found Kreilach, who had slipped through on his run, and he then headed the ball past Clark to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

48' - GOAL (POR) - Moments after halftime, and in a driving snow, Portland came out with energy and tied the score at 1-1. Timbers attacker Sebastián Blanco lofted his corner kick towards the back post that Dairon Asprilla jumped high to snap down and into the back of the goal. It was Asprilla's third goal in as many games across regular season and playoffs.

67' - CHANCE (POR) - Blanco, with time and space from 25 yards out from goal, uncorked a dipping shot that RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando dove to his left to narrowly palm away from the far corner.

68' - CHANCE (POR) - Diego Valeri, who subbed in in the 63rd minute, dribbled right down the middle of the field and fired a low shot from the edge of the area that Rimando dove to his right to catch.

73' - CHANCE (POR) - Valeri sprung Andy Polo down the right channel. Polo lofted a ball to the back post that was headed down where Blanco bicycled a shot on goal but it was deflected away for a corner from close range.

86' - CHANCE (POR) - On the break forward, Polo fed Asprilla on his right. Asprilla went into the RSL 18-yard box but then cut a ball back to Valeri near the top of the box. Valeri rifled a shot inches wide of the left post.

87' - GOAL (RSL) - Real Salt Lake took back the lead when Joao Plata skipped a pass into the Timbers box that slipped past outstretched defenders and into the path of an open Jefferson Savarino who slotted it past a diving Clark to make it 2-1 for the home side.
