PTFC: From the Archives #Statman Edition | Timbers' first MLS win over Seattle

David Horst, Franck Songo'o, Timbers vs. Seattle, 6.24.12

In Portland's second season in MLS, the club hosted Seattle Sounders FC on June 24, 2012 in front of a raucous Timbers crowd. Buoyed by two first-half goals, the Timbers defeated the Sounders, 2-1, for the club's first victory over Seattle in MLS competition.

As a special edition of SEAvPDX Week, presented by 76®, this 2012 match will re-air at 7pm PT on Saturday, May 23, 2020 on Timbers.com with a special commentary hosted by Jake Zivin and featuring former Timbers Jack Jewsbury, Futty Danso and David Horst. This week’s PTFC: From the Archives is presented by KeyBank.

1Surprise! In his three seasons with the Timbers, defender David Horst scored just one goal. His thunderous header against the Sounders delivered the game-winning goal. Horst is one of three players in the club's all-era history to score against the Sounders in league play and never score another goal for the club, along with Brent Sancho and Steven Taylor.

38History Books – The match featured a then-club record 38 fouls, which was, at the time, the most combined fouls in any Timbers MLS match. Seattle committed 23 fouls, which is still the most fouls ever committed by the Sounders in an MLS regular-season match.

13Looking Ahead – Portland has won 13 matches in all competitions against the Sounders in the club's MLS era with this match being the first. The 13 wins over Seattle are tied for the most the Timbers have against any opponent since joining MLS with the club also having 13 victories against San Jose.

3Trophy Hunting – The victory was a major lynchpin in Portland's 2012 Cascadia Cup-winning campaign. Portland ended the season with 11 points against Seattle and Vancouver to give the club their third Cascadia Cup since the competition's founding in 2004.

7On A Streak – When Kris Boyd scored in the 16th minute, it marked the seventh consecutive Timbers goal in which Boyd had factored into. In that streak, Boyd had four goals, one assist, and had the last touch for Portland on two own goals.
