PTFC: From the Archives #Statman Edition | Regular season finale victory puts Thorns in playoffs

Needing a victory to secure a spot in the 2014 NWSL playoffs, Portland Thorns FC defeated rival, Seattle Reign FC, 1-0, on Aug. 17, 2014 at Providence Park. The match was the final regular season match of 2014 and capped a run of four straight home wins.

6X4Variety- Forward Alex Morgan delivered the lone goal of the match, her sixth of the season. Morgan became the fourth different Thorns player to tally six or more goals in 2014, joining Jessica McDonald, Allie Long, and Christine Sinclair. 


5Rivalry – Despite coming into the match 21 points behind Seattle in the regular season standings, Portland took home the victory. It was the Thorns fifth win over Seattle in their first seven matches as NWSL teams. 


4Access Denied – With five saves in the match, goalkeeper Nadine Angerer delivered her fourth shutout of the season. The win also marked the second consecutive home shutout for the German International. 


3Precision Passing – Morgan's goal came off of an Allie Long corner kick to give Long her third assist of the season. Long notched three or more assists in each of her first three seasons with Portland. 


6Looking Ahead– The win sealed a trip to the postseason for Portland, which is something that has become a familiar place for Thorns FC. Portland has made the NWSL playoffs in six different seasons, the most of any team in league history.
