STEM sLAB | Timber Joey builds a ski jump

STEM sLAB, presented by Daimler Trucks North America, has Timber Joey building a ski jump.

There are a few different tracks you can make using different segments. Use the directions below for each segment type. Mix and match to make the ski jump or rollercoaster you want!

The first will be the straight segment.

  1. Start by grabbing a piece of paper. Cut the paper so that it is 3 inches x 11 inches. Draw two lines on the paper that divide the paper into three 2.5cm wide strips.
  2. Fold the two sides up to form walls.

Next make a hill segment.

  1. Cut another 3 inch x 11 inch piece of paper. Draw two lines on the paper that divide the paper into three 2.5cm wide strips.
  2. On the outside borders cut up to each parallel line every 2.5 centimeters. Fold all the tabs up to start the walls.
  3. Now bend the segment into the shape you want. We will give it some curves at the top and the bottom to make a hill. Use the tape to keep it in its shape.

Now make a loop. Repeat the same instructions as the hill, but tape all the tabs together so that it forms a loop shape.

  1. Cut another 3 inch x 11 inch piece of paper. Draw two lines on the paper that divide the paper into three 2.5cm wide strips.
  2. On the outside borders cut up to each parallel line every 2.5 centimeters. Fold all the tabs up to start the walls. Fold the tabs to make a loop.

Now we are going to build our final segment of the roller coaster track. This will be a curved segment.

  1. Cut a 3 inch x 11 inch piece of paper. Draw two lines to divide the paper into 2.5 cm wide strips.
  2. Make cuts every 2.5cm on the length of one side. Do not make any cuts on the other side.
  3. Fold the uncut side up to create a wall.
  4. Fold the tabs on the other side up to create the other wall. Bend the tabs to make a curve and use tape to keep its shape.

Next we will make the pole to hold the ski jump or roller coaster.

  1. Cut a 2.5in x 11in piece of paper. Draw four parallel lines that are each .5 inches apart.
  2. On the bottom of the paper cute up on each line 2.5 cms.
  3. Fold along the lines to form a square shape. Use the tape to hold it in place. Now fold the tabs at the end outward. These will help us stand the pole up.
  4. Repeat this again so you have two poles.
  5. Now put it all together! Tape the pieces to a piece of cardboard or a table to have it stand up. Tape each segment together to make the final product.
  6. Once your ski jump or rollercoaster is completed use a marble to test it out!
