Lindsey Horan, Thorns vs Spirit 07.05.20

HERRIMAN, Utah – Thorns midfielder Lindsey Horan scored her first goal of the tournament on a brilliant header off a set piece in the second half and Portland Thorns FC drew 1-1 with the Washington Spirit in the club's third match of the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup presented by P&G and Secret. 




Match Moments

12' - SAVE (POR) - Battling the sun and shadows, Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby came up with a big save on a driven shot from distance by Washington's Ashley Sanchez. 

16' - CHANCE (POR) - Horan served in a left-footed cross that found the unmarked head of Portland striker Tyler Lussi. Lussi's header went high over the Spirit goal. 

27' - CHANCE (POR) - In a scramble after a Horan pass was cleared near the goal line, Thorns midfielder Christine Sinclair saw her left-footed shot go just wide of the net. 

41' - SAVE (POR) - Washington's Kumi Yokoyama gathered a clearance and put a volleyed shot on frame but Bixby made another diving save to deny the Spirit.


62' - SAVE (POR) - Bixby again delivered a diving save when her right hand stopped a shot from Washington's Ashley Hatch from 10 yards out. 

69' - GOAL (POR) - Horan gave Thorns the lead when she found the end of a Meghan Klingenberg free kick with a diving header. Horan's goal was her first of the Challenge Cup and gave Portland their first advantage of the tournament. 

77' - GOAL (WAS) - The Spirit evened up the match when defender Samantha Staab scored a header after a redirected corner kick. 


88' - CHANCE (POR) - Horan forced a diving save when her right-footed shot from distance looked goal-bound, only to be denied by a dive from Washington goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.

  • Lindsey Horan was named Budweiser Woman of the Match, scoring her first goal of the tournament.
  • Katherine Reynolds and Gabby Seiler made their tournament debuts, entering the match as second-half substitutes.
  • Through three matches, 20 players have made an appearance for Portland in the Challenge Cup.
  • Meghan Klingenberg recorded her first assist of the Challenge Cup.
  • Bella Bixby, Horan, Klingenberg and Christine Sinclair have each started the first three matches for Portland.
