MLS IS BACK TOURNAMENT MATCH RECAP | New York City FC 1, Portland Timbers 3

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Portland Timbers came from behind with a goal from Sebastián Blanco, a strike off the bench from Diego Valeri and an absolute scorching golazo from Andy Polo to best New York City 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back Tournament Knockout Stage presented by Audi at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Saturday evening.

With the win, the Timbers advance to the tournament semifinals against the Philadelphia Union on Aug. 5 (5pm PT, FS1).

Match Moments

8' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland broke out forward with Yimmi Chara and Sebastián Blanco leading the charge. Chara came down the NYC middle channel and slipped a no-look pass through to an open Jeremy Ebobisse in the box but the striker's shot went over the bar.

27' - GOAL (NYC) - Portland defender Larrys Mabiala was called for a soft foul in the box and NYC's Jesús Medina stepped to the spot and converted the penalty to give the Cityzens a 1-0 lead.

38' - CHANCE (POR) - Marvin Loría received a pass forward from Blanco on the right channel. He sent a ball into the area where Yimmi Chara made a late run to the back post on but his header went just wide.

43' - GOAL (POR) - Portland tied the game after patiently moving the ball around the NYC 18-yard box. Blanco sprung Jorge Villafaña to the endline who then cut his pass back into the mixer. It was deflected by an NYC defender but right to Blanco who quickly slotted his shot into the lower right corner of the net to make the score 1-1.

54' - CHANCE (POR) - A weak back pass from NYC was pounced on by Diego Valeri in the 18-yard box. He back-heeled it to a sprinting Blanco who then cut it across to an open Ebobisse on the far post. The Portland forward fired a shot on frame only to have NYC goalkeeper Sean Johnson race across the face of goal to make the save. Ebobisse hit the rebound towards the near post but Johnson again kicked the ball away.

65' - GOAL (POR) - Portland took a 2-1 lead when a ball over the top found Valeri – who came in at the half – right on the edge of the NYC box. Valeri deftly chested the ball down to Jaroslaw Niezgoda who then fed it back to Valeri as he split the defense with his timed run. Valeri received the ball and fired it into the back of the net.

66' - CHANCE (POR) - A minute later, Niezgoda got open in the box but pulled his shot wide of the right post.

76' - GOAL (POR) - Timbers midfielder Andy Polo, who had only subbed in a minute earlier, received a ball down the left side from Blanco. The Peruvian international then cut in towards the edge of the area and uncorked a blistering shot past a diving Johnson and into the far side netting to make the score 3-1.

The Portland Timbers will now face the Philadelphia Union in the semifinals of the MLS is Back Tournament on Aug. 5 (5pm PT, FS1).
