MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 5, LA Galaxy 2

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers earned a spot in the 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs with a resounding 5-2 victory over the LA Galaxy Sunday night at Providence Park highlighted by a brace and assist from forward Jaroslaw Niezgoda, a penalty kick from midfielder Diego Valeri, a goal from midfielder Eryk Williamson and an absolute golazo from midfielder Andy Polo.

Midfielder Yimmi Chara tied an MLS record with four assists while defender Pablo Bonilla picked up his first career MLS assist.

Match Moments

6' - GOAL (POR) - Portland went out to an early 1-0 lead with a glancing header from forward Jaroslaw Niezgoda. The goal came about as defender Jorge Villafaña dribbled down the left flank before crossing a ball into Niezgoda whose header found the back post bottom corner of the Galaxy net.

19' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers doubled their lead in the 19th minute with another goal from Niezgoda. On an attempted Galaxy clearance following a Portland corner kick, the ball only got as far as Villafaña. Villafaña hammered a shot forward that was blocked by an LA defender but the ball fell to Yimmi Chara who slid a ball to his left to Pablo Bonilla. Bonilla clipped a ball forward to Niezgoda near the penalty spot who then snapped his header past diving LA goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann and into the net.

30' - GOAL (POR) - After a speedy run by Yimmi Chara into the box resulted in a hand ball call against LA defender Nick DePuy, Portland's captain Diego Valeri stepped to the penalty spot and fired a ball into the left side to give the Timbers a 3-0 lead.

46' - GOAL (LA) - Moments after the second half began, a poor Portland clearance led to a Galaxy goal from Cristian Pavón.

58' - SAVES (POR) - Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark made a nice save as he parried away a hard shot from LA's Pavón. Moments later, Clark quickly dove to his right to cover up a header from Galaxy midfielder Sebastian Lletget.

60' - GOAL (POR) - Eryk Williamson restored the Timbers' three-goal lead as he took a pass from Niezgoda, completely corkscrewed Galaxy defender Daniel Steres and then nutmegged Klinsmann to make the score 4-1 for the home side.

71' - CHANCE (POR) - Valeri curled a hard free kick shot around the LA wall towards the far post but Klinsmann made a diving save.

74' - GOAL (POR) - Timbers midfielder Andy Polo scored a stunning goal to give Portland a 5-1 lead. In his first game back from international duty, Polo spied an across-the-18-yard chipped ball from Yimmi Chara and volleyed it deftly into the back of the goal.

90+1' - GOAL (LA) - Pavón scored his second goal of the match late for the Galaxy as he cleaned up a rebound in front of the Portland net.
