MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 1 (7), FC Dallas 1 (8)

PORTLAND, Ore. – After 90 minutes of regulation and 30 more minutes of extra time that ended at 1-1, the Portland Timbers narrowly lost 8-7 to FC Dallas on penalty kicks in the Western Conference Round One of the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs Sunday evening at Providence Park.

Match Moments

6' - CHANCE (POR) - The Timbers worked some good combination play around the attacking third before Felipe Mora led Jorge Villafaña with a pass down the left. The defender then looped a cross centrally where Yimmi Chara headed it on frame but right at Dallas goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer.

11' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland forced a turnover in the Dallas side with the ball ending up with Mora. Mora held the ball up, spun and then sent a ball out right to midfielder Andy Polo who then hit a low shot through traffic that Maurer had to get down to save.

27' - CHANCE (POR) - On a Portland corner kick, Diego Valeri curled an outswinging ball from the near side that Larrys Mabiala headed towards goal but just a bit high over the crossbar.

54' - CHANCE (POR) - In the second half, Valeri sent in a free kick that was headed out by Dallas but only as far as Cristhian Paredes at the edge of the 18-yard box. Paredes hit a blazing shot on the volley that Maurer manage to just tip over the bar.

64' - CHANCE (POR) - Paredes intercepted a pass and took a hard shot that pinged off the post. Moments later, Polo rifled a shot that Maurer parried away just wide of the far post.

72' - CHANCE (POR) - On a Valeri throw in that floated through to Mora, Mora split the defense and was through on goal but his shot was narrowly saved by Maurer.

82' - GOAL (POR) - Portland took a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute as the Timbers carefully worked the ball around the left channel. Yimmi Chara played back to Villafaña, who slipped it to Paredes. Paredes played back to Valeri who then weighted a perfect pass ahead to Villafaña who raced through an opening and fired his shot into the top side of the goal.

90' - SAVE (POR) - Goalkeeper Steve Clark made a one-handed save on a header from Dallas' Ricardo Pepi.

90+3' - GOAL (DAL) - On a looping ball forward from Dallas, Pepi was through and hit a shot that was saved by Clark and bounced off the right post but Pepi then scored off the rebound to even the score at 1-1.

120+2' - CHANCE (POR) - On the literal last kick of the game, Valeri chipped a floating ball to the back corner that bounced just off the back post and away.

PENALTIES - After 30 minutes of extra time, the score remained even at 1-1 and the game went to penalty kicks.

Portland and Dallas were even through the first five penalty kicks and the next two sudden death kicks with Valeri, Marco Farfan, Dario Zuparic, Jeremy Ebobisse, Blake Bodily, Diego Chara and Marvin Loría all scoring for the Timbers. Dallas' Reto Ziegler, Franco Jara, Bressan, Pepi, Ryan Hollingshead, Matt Hedges, and Tanner Tessman all scored for the visitors.

In the eighth frame, Ema Twuamsi scored for Dallas with Villafaña then next stepping to the spot. He hit a strong shot to the right of goal but Maurer made a diving save to end the game.
