MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 5, CD Marathón 0

PORTLAND, Ore.- The Portland Timbers welcomed back fans to Providence Park with an emphatic 5-0 victory over CD Marathón Tuesday night. Yimmi Chara notched the second hat trick in the Timbers MLS era while Diego Valeri and Marvin Loría also scored. Portland won the two-legged series by a 7-to-2 margin and secures a spot in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinals for the first time in club history. 



Match Moments

18' — GOAL (POR) — After Dairon Asprilla raced past multiple defenders, his deflected cross found Valeri, who then laid the ball off to Yimmi Chara. Chara then rocketed a one-time shot into the inside netting, past a flatfooted Marathón goalkeeper. 

34' — CHANCE (POR) — Portland was denied a two-goal advantage when goalkeeper Denovan Torres made a strong save on Felipe Mora after Mora found space behind the defense from a pass from Asprilla. 


36' — GOAL (POR) — Yimmi Chara doubled the advantage when he finished off his second goal of the night. It was again Asprilla who raced past defenders on the left side of the field before he delivered a pinpoint pass to an unmarked Chara who easily slotted the ball home. 

45+' — BLOCK (POR) — On the last kick of the first half, defender Dario Zapuric made a goalline denial of Kervin Arriaga to maintain the clean sheet. 


47' — CHANCE (POR) — Early in the second half, Valeri forced a diving save from Torres to give the Timbers a corner kick. 


61' — CHANCE (POR) — After a scramble in the box, Asprilla had his shot from close range denied off the line by a defender. 


66' — GOAL (POR) — Valeri extended Portland's lead when he finished off a Josecarlos Van Rankin pass with a one-time finish from the right-side of the box. it was the second consecutive match that Van Rankin delivered an assist.

72' — CHANCE (POR) — The Timbers almost found a fourth goal when Valeri beat his defender to the end line before delivering a pass to Marvin Loría. Loria's shot was saved by a sprawling Torres.


74' — CHANCE (POR) — Yimmi Chara almost scored his third when he fired a shot from the top of the box, only to be denied by Torres. 


78' — GOAL (POR) — Yimmi Chara secured his hat trick when Torres saved a Loría shot directly into the path of a charging Chara. The goal was the last kick of the match for Chara, who was substituted out immediately after to a round of applause from the Providence Park crowd. 

89' — GOAL (POR) — Loría finished the night off in style when he chested down a long ball from Cristhian Paredes, held off the defender, and delivered a sliding finish past the goalkeeper. 


Notes

  • The Timbers have advanced to the quarterfinals of the SCCL for the first time in club history.
  • Portland improved to 6-2-2 in 10 all-time appearances in SCCL play, including a mark of 5-0-1 in home matches.
  • Claudio Bravo, Ismaila Jome and Josecarlos Van Rankin made their Providence Park debuts in the match.
  • Diego Valeri scored his third goal in SCCL play with his previous two goals coming in the 2016 edition of the tournament.
  • Valeri has scored 97 goals in all competitions for the Timbers.
  • Marvin Loría scored his first goal for the club since 2019. He has now scored three goals across all competitions for the club.
  • Van Rankin tallied an assist for a second consecutive match.
  • Dairon Asprilla delivered his first assist of the season and his 13th across all competitions with the Timbers.
  • Valeri notched his first assist of the season, increasing his career assist total to 101 across all competitions.
  • Cristhian Paredes recorded the seventh assist of his Timbers career in the match.
  • Blake Bodily made his Concacaf Champions League debut, becoming the first Homegrown Player in MLS history to make in an appearance in the MLS is Back Tournament, the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and the CCL before playing in the regular season.
  • Bill Tuiloma, Bodily and Loría each made their Concacaf Champions League debut.

The Timbers square off against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in their opening match of the MLS season on Sunday, April 18, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
