PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC midfielders Crystal Dunn and Lindsey Horan, goalkeeper Adrianna Franch and defender Becky Sauerbrunn were named to the U.S. Women’s National Team roster for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, it was announced today. Before the team’s departure to Japan, the USWNT will play of pair of Send-Off Series matches against Mexico on July 1 and July 5.
The Tokyo Olympics will mark the third trip to the Olympics for Sauerbrunn. For Dunn and Horan, it marks the second time they have been named to an Olympic roster, while this is Franch’s first time being named to a roster for the Olympics.
Dunn (114 caps, 24 goals) appeared in her first Olympics with the USWNT in 2016. At the Rio Olympics, Dunn played in all four games, making two starts. She scored her first Olympic goal in a 2-2 draw against Colombia in group play and also added in assist in the match.
Horan (96 caps, 21 goals) made her first Olympic roster in 2016, appearing in all four matches for the USWNT during the tournament. She made her first start against Colombia in group play.
The Olympics will mark Franch’s second inclusion on a U.S. roster for a major international tournament. Franch was part of the 2019 Women’s World Cup roster. The Thorns FC goalkeeper has earned five caps with the USWNT, featuring most recently on June 13 in a 4-0 win over Jamaica.
Sauerbrunn (186 caps) helped the United States win the gold medal at 2012 Olympics and played in all four matches for the USWNT at the 2016 Olympics. In 2016, Sauerbrunn played every minute for the USWNT. She made her first Olympic roster in 2012, playing in three matches as a substitute, including appearances in the semifinal and the gold medal match.
In group play at the Olympics, the USWNT will square off against Sweden (July 21), New Zealand (July 24) and Australia (Aug. 9). The quarterfinals are set to take place on July 30 and the semifinals on Aug. 2. The tournament concludes with the bronze medal match on Aug. 5 and the gold medal match on Aug. 6.
