Academy Update | Thorns Academy sweep Burlingame for first wins

Portland Thorns FC Academy made a clean sweep of Burlingame Soccer Club on Sept. 30, with all four age groups recording victories at 53rd Street Community Sports Park. The Thorns U-14s had a breakout performance, earning a 9-2 victory.


The Thorns U-19 Academy (1-1-1, 4pts) received early goals from Hailee Rasmussen and CarlieBateman in the fifth and 12th minutes, respectively, to guide the team to a 3-0 win against Burlingame’s U-19 side. Paige Lacey tallied her first goal of the season in the 78th minute to help secure the team’s first victory of the season.


Thorns U-17 Academy (1-1-1, 4pts) secured its first win of the season, defeating Burlingame 4-0 behind four different goal scorers. Octavia Gosnell (13th minute) and Maggie Lacey (34th minute) each scored in the first half – their first goals of the season. Portland then found the back of the net twice in the closing minutes, with an 87th-minute tally from Ava Benedetti and another in the 90th minute from leading scorer Paige Alexander. The goal was Alexander’s third of the season.


It was a shut-out victory for the Thorns U-15 Academy (1-2-0, 3pts), defeating Burlingame 3-0. A brace from Gabriella Warta led the way, scoring twice inside the opening 15 minutes. KylahWilliams then provided an insurance goal in the 78th minute to seal the team’s first win of the 2017-18 season.


Nine goals. The Thorns U-14 Academy (1-2-0, 3pts) produced nine goals in a dominate win against Burlingame. The team received two-goal performances from three different players – Fatima Brotherson-Errich, Andie Buckley and Payton Lawson. Buckly got the scoring started in the fourth minute and the team didn’t look back. Jesse Hawes, Lily Loughney and Emily Rehn also contributed goals in the team’s first win of the season.
