But the tournament is not over.
The Portland Thorns FC took an early lead, but ultimately fell to CF Monterrey Femenil in penalty kicks in the semifinal of the 2022 Women's International Champions Cup. Marissa Everett opened the scoring in the fifth minute and the Thorns' defense held strong, but a second-straight WICC trophy wasn't meant to be.
Match Moments
2' - CHANCE (POR) - Everett came close to putting the Thorns on the board early. In on goal the young forward had only the keeper to beat, but her attempt was saved from close range.
5' - GOAL (POR) - Everett wasn't to be denied twice on Wednesday evening. Racing past Monterrey's defense, Everett played the offside line perfectly as she received a perfect ball into space from teammate Janine Beckie. From there, Everett rolled the ball into the back of the net.
12' - CHANCE (POR) - Michele Vasconcelos nearly opened her Thorns account early in the first half, receiving a beautiful midfield switch from Beckie and making a cut back before unleashing a shot that was ultimately saved.
25' - CHANCE (POR) - Played in on goal, Beckie received the ball and attempted to slip it into the path of Rocky RodrÃguez, but the Costa Ricans stab at goal was cleared off the line and ultimately played away.
46' - CHANCE (POR) - Beckie made contact with an early second-half cross, but her headed attempt was punched away and eventually cleared by Monterrey.
48' - CHANCE (POR) - On the Thorns next attempted cross, Hannah Betfort attacked the ball with her foot and made contact with the ball, but it wasn't enough to turn the ball into the net.
58' - CHANCE (POR) - Vasconcelos tried for goal herself with a driven shot from outside the box that forced an impressive one-handed save out of Monterrey's keeper.
68' - GOAL (MON) - Las Rayadas equalized the game in the 68th minute, courtesy of Diana GarcÃa. After a string of passes down the right, GarcÃa weaved into the heart of Portland's box before taking a low, driven shot that beat goalkeeper Abby Smith at her far post.
82' - CHANCE (POR) - Quick on the attack, recently-subbed-in Sam Coffey received the ball in the box and took a touch wide before firing a shot that missed the target.
87' - SAVE (POR) - The visitors floated a late cross into the box that nearly turned disastrous for the Thorns. Luckily, the ball bounced into the waiting arms of Smith who secured the save.
