PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC have signed defender Reyna Reyes to a contract extension through the 2026 season. Reyes agreed to new contract terms and her option for the 2026 season was executed after her appearance in Portland’s match against the North Carolina Courage on Aug. 20.

“We are excited that Reyna wants to make a long-term commitment to the club and establish Portland as her home,” said Thorns FC general manager Karina LeBlanc. “Reyna is a special young talent that we believe has a bright future in this league and will contribute not only on the field for this team for many years, but also make an impact in our community.”

Across all competitions in 2023, Reyes has appeared in 21 games (10 starts), tallying two goals in her first NWSL season. In regular season competition, Reyes has played in 16 matches, earning five starts. The defender earned her first NWSL start on April 14 at home against the Houston Dash and scored her first professional goal – the game-tying goal in stoppage time – of a 1-1 road draw against San Diego Wave FC on May 26.

“Reyna has come into this group and made an immediate impact on the field as a rookie,” said Thorns FC head coach Mike Norris. “She has shown her attacking qualities on the ball and tremendous tenacity in her defending. Reyna has shown great growth this season as a young professional and we look forward to working with her as she continues to develop with us.”

At the international level, Reyes recently received a call up for the Mexico Women’s National Team ahead of their 2023 W Gold Cup qualifier matches against Puerto Rico (Sept. 22) and Trinidad and Tobago (Sept. 26) in Mexico. Reyes, who has made four appearances for the senior team, earned her first cap with Mexico in 2021 against Costa Rica.

The fifth overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, Reyes earned first team All-American honors in her senior season, helping leading Alabama to the 2022 Women’s College Cup. In her final season, the SEC Defender of the Year also earned first team All-Region and All-SEC honors, helping anchor a Crimson Tide backline that recorded a program-record 12 shutouts and 23 wins. She appeared in 27 games (27 starts), tallying eight goals and an assist. A three-time first All-SEC pick and four-time All-Region selection, Reyes appeared in 79 career games (79 starts), recording 16 goals and five assists during her career with the Crimson Tide.
