PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC forward Sophia Smith was named June Player of the Month, presented by EA SPORTS, the NWSL announced today.

Smith started all four regular season matches for Portland, tallying six goals in 348 minutes of action as Thorns FC posted a record of 3-1-0 during the month of June. Smith scored in four consecutive games and currently leads the Golden Boot race with 10 goals this season. Notably, Smith is the third player in NWSL history to record multiple scoring streaks of four or more games (Kerr 3, Kim Little 2).

The Windsor, Colo. native began her scoring streak with a road goal at OL Reign to help Portland earn a 2-0 win against their Cascadia rival. Smith continued her streak, scoring in three straight road games with a goal on the road against the Orlando Pride (June 11) and the Chicago Red Stars on June 18. Smith concluded the month with her second career hat trick in a 4-2 win at home against the Washington Spirit on June 23.

With her hat trick, Smith became the third player in league history to net two hat tricks in one season along with Kerr and Kristen Hamilton. It was the seventh multi-goal game of Smith’s career. She became the youngest player to score 30 goals at 22 years, 10 months and 13 days, besting Sam Kerr who accomplished this feat at 23 years and nine months. The forward hit 31 career goals for Portland, which moved her into second-place all-time for career goals in club history.

The NWSL Player of the Month presented by EA Sports is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
