PORTLAND, Ore. Portland Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath was named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 1, it was announced today.

Heath, 30, notched a goal and an assist in Portland’s 2019 season-opening match – a 2-0 win over the Orlando Pride on April 14 at Orlando City Stadium. Dating back to the 2018 season, Heath has now scored a goal in five straight regular-season matches and recorded a goal or an assist in seven consecutive matches. Her assist against Orlando was the 22nd of her NWSL career, which is tied for the most in league history.

In the first half, Heath provided a back-heel pass, setting up Caitlin Foord for her first career NWSL goal in the 45th minute to give Thorns FC a 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes into the second half, Heath delivered an impressive back-heel goal from inside the box, redirecting a cross from Foord to put Portland ahead 2-0.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers covering the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
