PORTLAND, Ore. – The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) today announced that Portland Thorns FC midfielder Sam Coffey and forward Sophia Smith were named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month, presented by Mastercard, for the month of June. The duo helped Thorns FC win three of their four matches in June, including road wins at OL Reign (June 3) and the Chicago Red Stars (June 18).

Coffey played every minute of every match for Portland in June, logging 360 minutes. The 24-year-old midfielder tallied two assists against the Washington Spirit to help Portland earn a 4-2 win at home on June 23. Notably, it marked her second multi-assist performance of the 2023 campaign. Coffey currently leads the league with six assists this season.

Smith started all four matches in June and scored a goal in each of them, recording six goals in that stretch with a hat trick on June 23 against the Spirit. Recording her second career hat trick, Smith became just the third player in league history to net two hat tricks in one season (Sam Kerr, Kristen Hamilton). She leads the league with 10 goals this season and now has 31 goals in her NWSL career. The 22-year-old striker became the youngest NWSL player to reach 30 career goals and also surpassed former Thorns FC midfielder Allie Long for second all-time on the Thorns FC scoring list.

The NWSL Best XI of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
