PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC today announced that the club has signed the 12th overall pick from the 2021 NWSL Draft, midfielder Sam Coffey, to a two-year contract.

"We knew we were getting a high-caliber player when the club drafted Sam, but the development we've seen in her over the last year excites us even more for her future in Portland," Thorns FC general manager Karina LeBlanc shared. "We are confident her quality of play will integrate into the team easily and add competitive balance to the club."

A three-time All-Big Ten First Team and All-Region First Team selection (2019-2021), Coffey concluded her collegiate career with 42 goals and 54 assists, becoming the 50th player in NCAA D1 soccer history to tally 40 goals and 40 assists. A second-team All-American in her final season, Coffey started all 21 matches for Penn State, leading the Nittany Lions in assists (8) while recording eight goals. In 2019, Coffey finished her junior season ranked second in the Big Ten in goals (11) and assists (10), starting in 24 of Penn State’s 25 matches.

“Sam is a versatile player and an attacking threat on the pitch,” said Thorns FC head coach Rhian Wilkinson. “She displays high levels of distribution, vision and technique. Her team-first mentality and work ethic make her a perfect fit for our club.”

In two seasons at Boston College (2017-18), Coffey appeared in 40 matches (40 starts), registering 17 goals and 24 assists.
