On Monday night, Nadia Nadim and the Danish Women’s National team shut out Norway 1-0, securing a spot in the UEFA Women's EURO quarterfinal.
Nadim—who played 81 minutes in the winning effort—and the Danes jumped out to an early lead, thanks to a fifth-minute opener from Katrine Veje. The Danish midfielder tucked in a left-footed effort off of a well-timed pass from captain Pernille Harder.
The Thorns FC forward made many dangerous attempts throughout the match but was unable to sneak one past the Norwegian goalkeeper.
Denmark went on to hold Norway scoreless in the 85 minutes that followed and advance to the final eight as the Group A runner up.
De Rød-Hvide found success by replicating their approach from their EURO 2013 semifinal run, in the group stage of this tournament. The Danes relied on stingy defense, which only allowed a single goal in Group A play, to hold two 1-0 leads and collect six points across three games.
Denmark will now move on to face the winner of Group B in the quarterfinal, July 29 (TBD, ESPN3). Sweden and Germany currently sit in a share atop Group B with 4 points per team, while Russia remains in striking distance of the first-place seed, with 3 points.
