The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
The Bilingual Reporter program is presented by Providence Health & Services Oregon, Coca-Cola and Toyota.
Thanks to Reportero Bilingüe program that gave me the magnificent opportunity of this interview with Sebastian Blanco, who is one of the most important soccer player of the Portland Timbers.
The interview was on March 25th, 2019. That day was very exciting because when we arrived at the Portland Timbers training facility they received us very well and Spencer Childs who is the director of soccer operations gave us a tour of the facilities, from where the warehouse and printing equipment for the shirts, to the players' locker room. After the tour, we went to the field where all the players were training. We sat on benches from where we watched the players training during a tough practice. We saw how they prepare physically and mentally before a game.
During the training we were able to observe the style and quality that great players have like Diego Valeri, and of course the Argentinian Sebastián Blanco who is 31 years old and plays the offensive midfielder position. Blanco demonstrated his amazing kick and placement of the ball with a huge angle goal. At the end of the training, I met Sebastian who was I went to interview. He was very friendly and then we sat down in a place to start the interview.
"It was a very long path I started playing when I was 4 years old. It started just for fun and for the pleasure of it, then I became a professional at 17 with Club Atlético Lanús in Argentina," clarified the Crack about his beginnings. In addition, he added that soccer is not a simple thing "Beyond that you can play well, it takes a lot of dedication and responsibility."
Later when I questioned him about the experiences that he has had in the soccer environment, he said that "Well, one of the best experiences is to be a champion in different clubs, as well as traveling through different countries and being part of the Argentine national team, but life has more failures than triumphs. So disappointments I have had many, like my knee injury which left me off the soccer fields for six months."
About his arrival with the Portland Timbers he said, "I found a place that feels like my home, not just in the club, but also this great city. The people are spectacular and the soccer environment, too. Finding a place like this is priceless." He also added that "We have some problems like everywhere, normal things because there are thirty of us in a locker room, but that does not affect us because we are a team of professionals players. When we enter the field, we are like brothers and we give the best for the team."
Finally, Sebastian said that "I always have identified with Pablo Aimar, for what he was as a person and as a soccer player" and what he would say to children who dream of being professional players is "First of all, enjoy it and be responsible, take care of yourselves and never give up and seek their dreams". In addition he would summarize this amazing sport in one phrase "Soccer is a lifestyle, for both player and fans".
At the end of this interview we took some photos, he gave me some advice and he gave me his autograph. Throughout the interview, Sebastian acquitted himself very well, with a very humble personality. In addition, the Portland Timbers staff gave me a very nice gift and two passes for a game at Providence Park. I can’t wait to go see the game!

Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. Con una entrevista profesional, los estudiantes desarrollaran sus habilidades de escritura y lenguaje en español a la vez se estarán conectando con el deporte que les apasiona.
Gracias al programa Reportero Bilingüe que me concedió la magnífica oportunidad de esta entrevista con Sebastián Blanco, que es uno de los jugadores referentes de Portland Timbers.
El día de la entrevista fue el 25 de marzo del 2019. Ese dia fue muy emocionante porque cuando llegamos al centro de entrenamiento de los Portland Timbers, nos recibieron muy bien y Spencer Childs quien es el director de operaciones de fútbol nos dio un recorrido de las instalaciones, desde donde estaba el almacén y estampado de las playeras hasta el vestidor de los jugadores. Después del recorrido, salimos hacía la cancha donde estaban todos los jugadores entrenando. Nos sentamos en unas bancas desde donde miramos todo un poco del entrenamiento. Vimos cómo se preparan físicamente y mentalmente antes de un partido.
Durante el entrenamiento, pudimos observar la calidad que tiene grandes jugadores como Diego Valeri, y por su puesto al argentino Sebastián Blanco que tiene 31 años, y juega en la posición de mediocentro ofensivo. Sebastian demostró la gran técnica que tiene en la pierna con un golazo que colgó al ángulo de la portería. Al final del entrenamiento, me presentaron con Sebastián. Él se portó muy amigable y después nos sentamos en un lugar para comenzar con la entrevista.
“Fue un camino muy largo. Comencé a jugar a los 4 años. Empezó como diversión y por gusto, después me convertí en profesional a los 17 años en el Club Atlético Lanús en Argentina” aclaró el Crack sobre sus inicios. Además de decir esto, añadió que el fútbol no es una cosa sencilla “más allá de que puedas jugar bien, se necesita mucha dedicación y responsabilidades”.
Después cuando lo cuestione sobre las experiencias que ha tenido dentro del entorno futbolístico él dijo que “Bueno un de las mejores experiencias es ser campeón en diferentes equipos, además de viajar por diferentes países y estar en la selección argentina, pero la vida está más llena de fracasos que de triunfos. Así que decepciones he tenido muchas como lesionarme la rodilla, que me dejo seis meses fuera de las canchas”.
Acerca de su llegada a los Portland Timbers dijo, “Encontré un lugar que la siento como mi casa, no solamente en el club sino también la ciudad. La gente es espectacular y el ambiente futbolístico también. Encontrar un lugar como este no tiene precio”. También añadió que hay “Problemas como en todos lados, cosas normales porque somos 30 en un vestuario, pero no afectan porque somos un equipo de profesionales y cuando uno entra a la cancha somos como hermanos y damos lo mejor para el equipo”.
Por último, Sebastián dijo que “Siempre me sentí identificado por Pablo Aimar por lo que fue como persona y como futbolista” y lo que les diría a los niños que sueñan con ser jugadores profesionales es “Primero que nada, que lo disfruten, y que tengan responsabilidad, que se cuiden y que nunca se rindan y busquen sus sueños”. Además el resumiría al fútbol en “El fútbol es un estilo de vida, tanto jugador como hinchas” .
Al final de esta entrevista nos tomamos algunas fotos. Me dio algunos consejos y me dio su autógrafo. Durante todo la entrevista Sebastián se portó muy bien, con una personalidad muy humilde. Además, el personal de Portland Timbers me obsequio un regalo muy agradable y dos pases para un juego en el Providence Park. ¡no puedo esperar para ver ese partido!
