PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Portland Timbers today signed midfielder Alejandro Gutierrez, pending an international work clearance.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Gutierrez played for the Utah Blitzz, formerly of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League. During his four seasons with the Blitzz, he was a member of two league championship teams and was named second team All-Premier Development League in 2004.
“’Guti’ is a very savvy and experienced player,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “Timbers fans know he can play, as he was voted ‘Man of the Match’ for the Blitzz against Portland in the 2001 U.S. Open Cup.”
Gutierrez has been training and playing in amateur leagues in the Salt Lake City area since the Blitzz folded to make way for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer in 2004.
The announcement brings the Timbers’ list of signed players to 18.
The Timbers open the home portion of their season by playing host to the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park on Friday, May 5. A variety of season ticket options are available by calling the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5555. For detailed ticket information, go to www.portlandtimbers.com.
