PORTLAND
, Ore.
– The United Soccer League announced today that Portland Timbers midfielder
Andrew Gregor
was named USL First Division Player of the Week for Week 4. Gregor recorded two goals and one assist in two matches last weekend. He now leads the league in goals (4) and points (9).
Additionally, defender
Leonard Griffin
and forward
Bryan Jordan
were selected to the Team of the Week for their individual performances against Seattle and Rochester.
Gregor, Griffin and Jordan helped the Timbers gain four points in the standings last weekend with a 2-0 shutout over the Rochester Raging Rhinos Sunday and a 2-2 draw against the Seattle Sounders on May 11.
Gregor, 31, has scored a goal in each of the last two matches and now has a total of four goals in four games this season. On May 11, Gregor netted the equalizer in a 2-2 draw against the Sounders, converting an 87th-minute penalty kick. Against Rochester on Sunday, Gregor scored the go-ahead goal in the 24th minute and then set up Griffin’s insurance goal eight minutes later for his first assist of the year.
Griffin, who joined the Timbers this season after three years with Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, netted his first goal as a Timber in the 32nd minute against Rochester. Running to space near the top of the box, Gregor fed Griffin, who blasted a 35-yard shot inside the far post to help the Timbers record their first win over Rochester in modern franchise history.
Jordan, a rookie from Oregon State University, sparked a late Timbers rally against Seattle, scoring his second goal of the week in the 78th minute. Then in the closing minutes of regulation, Jordan set up the game-tying penalty kick as he was taken down in the penalty area by a Sounders defender. Jordan scored his first professional goal earlier in the week in an exhibition match against Club Necaxa at PGE Park.
After three games in five days, the Timbers have 10 days to prepare for their next game on May 25 against the California Victory at PGE Park at 7 p.m. Click here for ticket information.
