Q&A: Getting to know Johan Claesson



Swedish midfielder Johan Claesson is one of several new players for the Timbers this season. See which parts of Portland he looks forward to experiencing when he arrives in town and more in the second installment of the preseason Q&A series.

Timbers: What did you know about the city of Portland prior to signing with the Timbers?
Johan Claesson:
Not that much. But I did know about the roses and parks that Portland is known for, and the Trail Blazers. I have a list of things that I’m anxious to see/experience when I get into town. That list includes, tasting Portland’s cuisine and experiencing different parts of downtown, like the Hawthorne District and Pioneer Courthouse Square. I also want to see the Oregon Coast and Columbia River Gorge.
PT: What are you looking forward to the most about playing for the Timbers in 2009?
JC:
I can’t wait to play in front of the Timbers’ fans and the Timbers Army.
PT: Describe the most memorable goal of your soccer career?
JC:
I scored a game-winning header in my first game as a starter in the Swedish premier league called the Allsvenskanliga.
PT: Who is your favorite soccer club to watch/keep track of and why?
JC:
I like to follow Real Madrid. I really do not know why – the club just struck me one day.
PT: What is or has been your favorite soccer venue to play in?
JC:
Råsunda Stadium. It is Sweden’s national stadium for soccer and is also where Swedish club AIK plays its home matches.
PT: Who has been the most influential person in your life, soccer or non-soccer related?
JC:
It’s a tie between my Mom and Dad.
