TUKWILA, Wash. – A goal and an assist by midfielder Lamar Neagle lead the Seattle Sounders FC Reserves to a 3-2 win over the Portland Timbers Reserves in an MLS Reserve League match at Starfire Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Neagle scored his second goal in Reserve League play to give Seattle a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The two sides traded goals in the second half, with Sounders FC Reserves getting goals from Pat Noonan and Michael Tetteh to build a 3-1 lead in the 74th minute.
The Timbers Reserves pulled within a single goal on two occasions in the second half. Defender David Horst knocked in a goal yards from the goal line to trim Seattle’s lead 2-1 in the 68th minute. Down 3-1, Portland received a late goal from substitute midfielder Bim Ogunyemi in second-half stoppage time to cut the deficit back down to a single goal at 3-2 before the final whistle.
Horst and Ogunyemi each scored their first goals in Reserve League play as the Timbers Reserves (1-1-0, 3pts) were handed their first loss of the Reserve League season.
Tetteh tallied his second goal, while Noonan contributed his first and forward Roger Levesque logged an assist to the lead the Sounders FC Reserves (3-0-0, 9pts) to a third straight Reserve League victory.
Seattle took a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute on a header by Noonan. From the right side, Neagle crossed the ball in to the box, finding Noonan near the penalty spot. Noonan snapped his header by Portland goalkeeper Adin Brown.
On a scrambled play following a free kick by Rodrigo Lopez, the Timbers Reserves pulled one back at 2-1 in the 68th minute. Ogunyemi’s initial shot was blocked by Seattle goalkeeper Terry Boss as he dove to the ground. The deflection rolled to Horst, who from his knees, knocked in a goal from inside two yards on a rolling shot.
A one-two play at the top of the box by Levesque and Tetteh set up Tetteh for an insurance goal for Seattle in the 74th minute. One-on-one with Brown, Tetteh slotted a low shot inside the left post for the goal from 12 yards out to lift the home side to a 3-1 lead.
Ogunyemi, making his first appearance with the Timbers Reserves, smashed in a late goal to help the Timbers Reserves pull within one goal at 3-2. The ball was played over the box from the right side to Ogunyemi on the left and he blasted a shot under the crossbar just before time expired.
