Smith's last-gasp clearance takes Save of the Week

Steven Smith, Timbers vs. FCD, 8.5.12

The Portland Timbers--winner of two in a row--have another upbeat development to add to their recent run of play:  a last-gasp header from defender Steven Smith that preserved a cathartic 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps and gave the Scotsman the Save of the Week for Week 25.

Timbers supporters showed up with reinforcements in the polls, lifting Smith to an easy win over former Portland goalkeeper and current Montreal netminder in the final tally. Smith garnered more than 56 percent of the vote, while Perkins trailed far behind at 22 percent. It also marked the second Portland player in as many weeks to win the award as Donovan Ricketts was victorious in Week 24.
