USL MATCH RECAP | Whitecaps FC 2: 1, Portland Timbers 2: 0

Chris Klute, vs. Whitecaps FC 2, 06.19.16

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Playing their first game of a two-match road trip, T2 fell 1-0 to Whitecaps FC 2 at Thunderbird Stadium on Sunday.

Whitecaps FC 2 (8-2-4, 28pts) benefited from forward Daniel Haber’s one-time finish inside the box to build a 1-0 lead for Vancouver in the 87th minute.

T2 (5-7-3, 17pts) were the first to threaten in the 15th minute when forward Kharlton Belmar’s low, driven strike from outside of the box forced goalkeeper Marco Carducci to make a save on the goal line. Sixteen minutes later, midfielder Blake Bodily’s in-swinging corner kick service nearly bounced past Carducci at the near post, but the ball was cleared out of danger in the 31st minute.

Coming out on the attack in the second half, midfielder Neco Brett sent a teasing ball across the goal mouth toward forward Villyan Bijev. With a one-time shot out of the air, Bijev redirected the service back into the six-yard box before having it cleared away at the goal line in the 55th minute. In the 80th minute, T2 executed their most dangerous opportunity of the match when defender Alvas Powell’s driven ball was tucked away by second-half substitute Victor Arboleda, but he was flagged offside at the near post.

Next week, T2 will travel to face Saint Louis FC at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on Saturday, June 25; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).

Saturday’s match will also be available via a live, high-definition web stream at www.timbers2.com.

Postgame Quote Sheet
T2 head coach Andrew Gregor
On the match…
“We’re disappointed in the result. I thought we played well at times. We deserved more out of the game than what we got.”

On scoring opportunities in the second half…
“I thought we got a hold of the game. We created some opportunities to score and unfortunately they didn’t go our way. We got caught late on a tough situation with Vancouver. If you don’t put your chances away you’ll always be under pressure, especially against a team like the Whitecaps.”
