MATCH RECAP | New York Red Bulls 0, Portland Timbers 0

HARRISON, N.J. - The Portland Timbers earned an away point in a 0-0 draw against the New York Red Bulls before 19,985 fans at Red Bull Arena on Sunday afternoon, extending their unbeaten run to seven games in league play while recording their second straight shutout.

Producing eight shots in the match, the Timbers (6-6-7, 25pts) threatened early in the game when midfielder Lucas Melano forced a strong save from New York (7-9-3, 24pts) goalkeeper Luis Robles in the 10th minute of play, hitting a powerful volley from the left side of the 18-yard box. Continuing to create chances on goal in the first half, midfielder Darlington Nagbe struck an effort from distance in the 25th minute, resulting in another save from Robles. Five minutes later, Nagbe came close to setting up forward Fanendo Adi for a finish while breaking on the counter attack, but the Red Bulls defense managed to cut out the danger.

Portland created its strongest chance of the game in the 55th minute when midfielder Ned Grabavoy found midfielder Ben Zemanski, setting up a well-struck volley that rattled off the crossbar. Five minutes later, Nagbe floated a cross into the box finding defender Nat Borchers, who headed the ball back across the face of goal. Melano pounced on the bouncing ball inside the area, hitting his final effort just wide of the target.

With the Timbers pressing forward late in the game, Zemanski fired another powerful attempt from the edge of the box in the 78th minute, hitting it just high of the target, while defender Zarek Valentin followed up two minutes later with a low, driven chance that was saved Robles at the near post.

On the defensive end, goalkeeper Jake Gleeson made four saves, marking his fourth straight game with at least four saves. After denying Felipe’s powerful free kick from distance in the 17th minute, Gleeson came up big in the final moments of the game, quickly reacting to parry Felipe’s close-range strike from the edge of the six-yard box, before pushing another shot from Felipe over the crossbar in the 92nd minute to maintain the Timbers third clean sheet of the season.

Next up, the Timbers return to Providence Park to face the Montreal Impact on Wednesday, July 13, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). Wednesday’s match will feature a local broadcast on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
