Thorns FC lose 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the third place match of 2022 WICC

After a scoreless first half, Chelsea found the back of the net and the eventual game winner in the 64th minute to secure third place in the tournament.

Portland Thorns FC dropped a 1-0 result to Chelsea FC in the third-place match of the 2022 Women’s International Champions Cup. After a scoreless first half, Chelsea found the back of the net and the eventual game winner in the 64th minute to secure third place in the tournament.

In the first semifinal match between Chelsea and Olympique Lyon on Aug. 17, Chelsea took an early 2-0 lead, but Lyon rallied back with a pair of late second-half goals, including a free kick from Lindsey Horan to send the match to penalty kicks. In the shootout, Lyon prevailed, advancing to the final for a second straight year at Providence Park. Portland was eliminated in the semifinals by C.F. Monterrey after playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation and falling 3-2 in a penalty-kick shootout. Marissa Everett provided Portland’s lone goal in the fifth minute of the semifinal, but Portland could not hold on to the lead and conceded Monterrey’s equalizer in the 68th minute. Monterrey will make its first WICC championship appearance against Lyon tonight at 8 p.m. (Pacific) on ESPN2.

Sights Set on NWSL

Portland will return to NWSL action this Wednesday, Aug. 24, traveling to face the North Carolina Courage at WakeMed Park at 4 p.m. (Pacific). Facing a quick turnaround, the team will return home to host the San Diego Wave at Providence Park on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). Both matches will be streamed on Paramount+ with a local broadcast on FOX 12 PLUS for Portland’s match against the Wave. Currently sitting at the top of the table, Thorns FC (7-1-7, 28 pts) are on an 11-game unbeaten streak, dating back to May 21, 2022.

Goal-Scoring Plays

CFC – Guro Reiten, 64th minute: Pernille Harder and Sam Kerr combined for a give-and-go into the box. Harder’s cross attempt took a deflection off Thorns FC defender Natalia Kuikka and Guro Reiten followed up and put the loose ball into the back of the net.
