The quest for the 2016 Cascadia Cup continues Sunday as the Portland Timbers travel to Vancouver to take on Whitecaps FC (1p.m. PT, ROOT SPORTS). The Timbers currently sit atop the Cascadia standings with nine points. The Timbers can take this year's Cup with a victory, a draw, or a loss by two or fewer goals against Vancouver, who currently sit in third place in the standings with six points.
Created by the supporters of the Sounders, Whitecaps and Portland Timbers, the Cascadia Cup has been around since 2004. It was contested by all three teams in USL until 2009, when the Sounders made their MLS debut. The Whitecaps and Timbers continued battling for the Cup in the lower divisions until 2011, when both moved up into MLS, allowing the Sounders to get back in on the competition.
Portland has won the Cascadia Cup once in their MLS era in 2012 and have a total of three titles across the USL and MLS eras.
The teams will have met a total of nine times this year, with each club playing the others three times during the MLS regular season.
