PORTLAND, Ore. – Thorns FC midfielder and defender Kendall Johnson spoke with PortlandThornsFC.com earlier this season about returning to play in her hometown, blogging, and dining out in Portland.

Q.: You were born and raised in Portland, attended the University of Portland and now you're playing for Portland Thorns FC. What does it mean for you to be able to play professional soccer in your hometown?

Kendall Johnson: "I've always dreamed of playing professionally, but to play across the street from my high school field and a seven-minute drive from the house I grew up in is a massive bonus. Being born and raised in Portland, I've witnessed the city's growing passion for soccer. Every time I put on my jersey, I think of how fortunate I am to represent my hometown and the best fans in the country. My family's pretty stoked to have me back as well, especially my grandma."

Q.: In your spare time you enjoy writing and even maintain a blog. What inspired your passion for writing and starting a blog?

KJ: "If you ask my friends, I'm a pretty awful in-person storyteller. I think I enjoy writing because it allows me to organize and express my thoughts. I created my blog, arrowliving.com, because I wanted to positively influence people's lives. There's something incredibly empowering about people who relentlessly pursue their passions, despite all their setbacks. I wanted to share stories of "Arrow Livers" as well as my own, to hopefully inspire individuals to go after their own dreams."

Q.: Playing in your third season in the NWSL, how has your game evolved from being a rookie to now having a few seasons as a professional under your belt?

KJ: "My rookie season, I was pumped up to play with players like Christie Rampone , who I idolized growing up. I still think it's awesome to play with such elite players, but I am a lot more comfortable and confident. With that said, I'm still young and I am always seeking opportunities to improve. We have an incredibly experienced and talented team, and I learn from them every day."

Q.: Portland has a robust restaurant scene, what are some of your favorite places to eat in the city?

KJ: "Oh my goodness, high-quality grub is one of my favorite topics. I could go on for days. I frequent casual cafe-type places often to write and read. I'm all about a place with "good vibes." Two of my favorite cafes are Harlow and Breken Kitchen. Kure also has a special place in my heart because of their unreal acai bowls. But my all-time favorite place to eat is my parents' house. My mom is an exceptional cook and my dad grills the best steak in Portland. Few things in life are better than a home-cooked meal made with love. Mom and dad, if you think I'm saying this just so that you guys will cook a meal for me in the near future, you are correct."
