PORTLAND, Ore. –
Midfielder Collen Warner scored a late goal to lead the Portland Timbers U-23s to a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency at PGE Park on Sunday afternoon.
Warner scored his second goal of the season in the 88th minute off a ball played over the top from defender Logan Emory. Warner flicked the ball over the head of a Vancouver defender and buried the ball into the goal to put Portland (8-3-1, 25pts) on top 1-0.
Goalkeeper Garret Staples recorded two saves to earn his third shutout of the season and preserve the Timbers U-23s unbeaten record at home (5-0-1). With the win, the Timbers U-23s move into second place in the Premier Development League’s Northwest Division.
The Whitecaps Residency (2-6-2, 8pts) suffered its fifth straight shutout loss on Sunday.
With today’s win, the Timbers U-23s are just four points behind division leaders the Kitsap Pumas. Portland needs to finish in the top three of their division to advance into playoffs. The top three teams of each division in the PDL are awarded a playoff birth.
The Timbers U-23s play host to Kitsap on July 4, at Tualatin High School in Tualatin, Ore., with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door.
