PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers, sparked by a brace from forward Samuel Armenteros, defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 Saturday evening at Providence Park. The game was the team's second win in a row and extended their unbeaten streak to 13 matches across all competitions.

Midfielder Diego Valeri contributed two assists in the match.

Match Moments

3' - CHANCE (POR) - On a Diego Valeri free kick to the right of the 18' yard box, defender Larrys Mabiala flashed a header just wide right of the goal.

14' - GOAL (POR) - Following a great interception from Lawrence Olum near midfield, Valeri dribbled up the middle before threading a ball to Armenteros on his left. Armenteros ghosted past his defender, took a touch and then scored to give Portland a 1-0 lead.

24' - CHANCE (POR) - Alvas Powell, galloping down the right flank, cut in to split two defenders and then passed the ball back to an open Armenteros in the box. His point-blank shot was deflected away by San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell.

44' - CHANCE (POR) - Armenteros nearly had another goal as he attempted a bicycle kick from Powell's throw-in that was pushed aside wide by Tarbell.

45+2' - BLOCK (POR) - With San Jose coming down the right side, defender Zarek Valentin managed to recover in the box to poke the ball away to the top of the arc. The ensuing shot was then blocked by Mabiala.

53' - GOAL (POR) - Armenteros earned the second brace of the year after taking another through ball from Valeri, dribbling forward with two defenders hassling him and then slotted the ball past Tarbell to make it a 2-0 lead for Portland.

57' - CHANCE (POR) - Armenteros, near the edge of the box, deftly passed a ball to Dairon Asprilla who was free on goal. His hard shot was blocked away by Tarbell. A minute later, with the timbers still in the box, Valentin passed the ball to Armenteros who hit the bouncing ball on the half-volley wide of the left post.

60' - SAVE (POR) - Jeff Attinella made a spectacular save in the 60th minute. Quakes midfielder Vako sent a ball to the back post for an open Quincy Amarikwa who leapt to half-bicycle a shot on frame that Attinella got his right hand to before smothering the rebound.

74' - CHANCE (POR) - Powell sent the ball forward to Valeri in the attacking third. Valeri dribbled to the end line before cutting the ball back to Sebastián Blanco at the edge of the area but Blanco's shot went high over the bar.

87' - GOAL (SJ) - Earthquakes midfielder Florian Jungwirth managed to get past the Portland backline and score with a low shot just underneath Attinella to cut Portland's lead to 2-1 in the second half.
