The Storyline

Portland earned their trip to San Jose following a thrilling 3-2 win over MLS NEXT Pro's Tacoma Defiance back on May 6 in the Round of 32. It was a back and forth affair at Starfire Sports Complex, with the Timbers taking the 34th minute lead only to fall behind 2-1 early in the second half. T2 forward Gage Guerra would play the super-sub role and level it in the 81st minute before Kevin Kelsy grabbed the winner with a stoppage-time penalty kick goal.

In the 12 days since their meeting with Tacoma, the Timbers have played three regular season matchups — recording one win and two draws — and will be on two full-days' rest heading into kickoff with the Earthquakes on Tuesday night.

San Jose earned their spot in the Round of 16 having defeated USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC 2-1 in the Round of 32. Forward Preston Judd led the way offensively for San Jose, recording a goal and an assist. Veteran winger Amahl Pellegrino got on the scoreboard with the opener in the 6th minute. Things got chippy in the final minutes with Quakes' defender Jamar Ricketts seeing red in the 83rd minute, and then conceding to Sacramento in stoppage time.

San Jose has experienced a similarly-packed shedule since their May 7 Open Cup win, and have also played three games since, recording one win and two draws in league play.
