The Storyline
Portland Timbers (3rd, 5-3-3, 18pts) vs. Sporting Kansas City (12th, 3-7-1, 10pts)
Portland returns to MLS-play following a successful Round of 32 win over Tacoma Defiance in the 2025 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night. With the regular season loss to San Jose in Matchday 11 now in the rear view mirror, the Timbers will look to harness the postivity of the midweek cup win to secure three points at home against Sporting Kansas City. Starting with Saturday's matchup, the Timbers begin a 6-games-in-18-days stretch, their busiest schedule to date in 2025.
Head coach Phil Neville spoke about the team's preparation ahead of the weekend stating, "It's the first three-game week, I've got to say I think the training we've put in has been in preparation for this period of six games in the next two weeks."
The Timbers' first opponent is a familiar foe in that stretch: Sporting Kansas City.
Portland and SKC just met less than a month ago at Children's Mercy Park, with Portland running away from Kansas with all three points following a 4-2 victory. Since that matchup, SKC has been in improving form, winning two of their last three matches. Dejan Joveljic has been their go-to man up front and has delivered five goals and an assist in 11 games (10 starts). Coincidentally, Joveljic has not put his name on the scoresheet since that meeting with Portland.
